SECRET focuses on the protection of critical control elements of electrical network systems, and in particular on controllers. This need is due to the evolution of its architecture and the need to break away from traditional control systems, based mainly on isolated networks, comprising proprietary components and legacy (hardware and software). However, this evolution has unfortunately entailed numerous architectural changes and complexities, adding multiple types of security risks that could put the system’s proper operation at risk.
In this case, the NICS Lab group participated in the security analysis of the remote control systems and smart meters (also known as smart meter together with their concentrators), and in the creation of a laboratory to execute live attacks and look into new vulnerabilities. For this purpose, the attacks had to be modelled in accordance with the systems analysed and their associated protocols.
