Enrique Alba, ITIS UMA Researcher, Among Spain’s Top 20 Computer Scientists According to Research.com
Professor Enrique Alba, Full Professor of Computer Science and researcher at the Institute of Software Technology and Engineering (ITIS UMA), ranks 17th in the Research.com list of the best Spanish scientists in Computer Science. This recognition places him as the highest-ranked researcher at the University of Málaga in this classification, with the next UMA colleague appearing in 77th place, and as the fourth-ranked researcher in all of Andalusia in the discipline. More Than Three Decades of Research Excellence
Dr. Enrique Alba earned his degrees in Computer Engineering and his PhD in Computer Science from the University of Málaga in 1992 and 1999, respectively. He is currently a full professor, teaching courses in communications software, distributed programming, and software quality, as well as participating in master’s and doctoral programs in areas such as smart cities, evolutionary algorithms, and the foundations of R&D&I. He is also a member of the Networking and Emerging Optimization (NEO) research group.
His research focuses on complex optimization and machine learning, leading an international team of PhDs and engineers. Throughout his career, he has organized prestigious international events such as ACM GECCO, IEEE IPDPS-NIDISC, IEEE MSWiM, IEEE DS-RT, and Smart-CT, in addition to delivering numerous doctoral courses and seminars at more than 70 foreign institutions. He has also coordinated multiple research projects, including 9 national and 7 European projects, as well as several bilateral initiatives.
Dr. Alba has also led twelve innovation projects with companies such as OPTIMI, Tartessos, ACERINOX, ARELANCE, TUO, INDRA, AOP, VATIA, EMERGIA, SECMOTIC, ArcelorMittal, ACTECO, CETEM, and EUROSOTERRADOS. He has served as a visiting professor at international institutions including INRIA, the University of Luxembourg, and the Technical University of Ostrava, as well as centers in Scotland, Japan, Argentina, Cuba, Uruguay, and Mexico.
Dr. Alba is editor for multiple international journals and book series published by Springer-Verlag and Wiley, and reviewer for more than 30 high-impact journals. He is listed among the most prolific authors in DBLP and has published 130 articles in ISI-indexed journals, 11 books, and numerous contributions to scientific conferences.
Enrique Alba’s ranking reflects the strong research foundation of ITIS UMA as an institute. With 11 active research groups in areas such as cybersecurity, computational intelligence, and software engineering, ITIS has established itself as one of the leading computer engineering research centers in Southern Europe, contributing to the advancement of key disciplines driving digital transformation.
