abstract = {Feature selection has a prominent role in high-dimensional datasets to increase classification accuracy, decrease the learning algorithm computational time, and present the most informative features to decision-makers. This paper proposes a two-stage hybrid feature selection for high-dimensional medical datasets: Maximum Pattern Recognition - Multi-objective Discrete Evolution Strategy (MPR-MDES). MPR is a rapid filter ranker that significantly outperforms existing frequency-based rankers in recognizing non-linear patterns, effectively eliminating a majority of non-informative features. Then, the wrapper Multi-objective Discrete Evolution Strategy (MDES) uses the remaining features and obtains sets of solutions which are automatically presented to decision-makers. The experiments conducted on large medical datasets demonstrate that MPR-MDES achieves considerable improvements compared to state-of-the-art methods, in terms of both classification accuracy and dimensionality reduction. One of the objectives of this cybersecurity branch is to find similarities between different files or functions used by malware programmers, thus allowing malware detection, classification and even attribution in a timely manner. In this article we survey the state of the art in this area, reviewing the different techniques that can be applied to the field, with the objective of studying similarity, and therefore detecting, classifying and attributing malware samples. We have developed a fuzzy hash capable of characterizing malware by generating an easily comparable and storable signature of its functions. Since our goal is to detect these similarities in huge amounts of data within a reasonable time-frame, the size of the hash must be limited while retaining as much information as possible.},

abstract = {<jats:p>In pseudo-Boolean optimization, a variable interaction graph represents variables as vertices, and interactions between pairs of variables as edges. In black-box optimization, the variable interaction graph may be at least partially discovered by using empirical linkage learning techniques. These methods never report false variable interactions, but they are computationally expensive. The recently proposed local search with linkage learning discovers the partial variable interaction graph as a side-effect of iterated local search. However, information about the strength of the interactions is not learned by the algorithm. We propose local search with linkage learning 2, which builds a weighted variable interaction graph that stores information about the strength of the interaction between variables. The weighted variable interaction graph can provide new insights about the optimization problem and behavior of optimizers. Experiments with NK landscapes, knapsack problem, and feature selection show that local search with linkage learning 2 is able to efficiently build weighted variable interaction graphs. In particular, experiments with feature selection show that the weighted variable interaction graphs can be used for visualizing the feature interactions in machine learning. Additionally, new transformation operators that exploit the interactions between variables can be designed. We illustrate this ability by proposing a new perturbation operator for iterated local search.</jats:p>},

abstract = {Federated learning is a paradigm that proposes protecting data privacy by sharing local models instead of raw data during each iteration of model training. However, these models can be large, with many parameters, provoking a substantial communication cost and having a notable environmental impact. Reducing communication overhead is paramount but conflictual to maintaining the model’s accuracy. Most research has dealt with the different factors influencing communication reduction separately without addressing their correlations. Moreover, most of them do not consider the heterogeneity of clients’ hardware. Finding the optimal configuration to fulfil all these training aspects can become intractable for classical techniques. This work explores the add-in that multi-objective evolutionary algorithms can provide for solving the communication overhead problem while achieving high accuracy. We do this by 1) realistically modelling and formulating this task as a multi-objective problem by considering the devices’ heterogeneity, 2) including all the communication-triggering aspects, and 3) applying a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm with an intensification operator to solve the problem. A simulated client–server architecture of four devices with four different processing speeds is studied. Both fully connected and convolutional neural network models are investigated with 33,400 and 887,530 weights, respectively. The experiments are performed using the MNIST and Fashion-MNIST datasets. A comparison is made between three approaches using an extensive set of metrics. Results prove that our approach obtains solutions with better accuracy than the full-communication setting and other methods while getting reductions in communications by around 1,000 times in most cases and up to 10,000 times in some cases compared to the maximum communication setting.},

abstract = {<jats:p>The success of the Internet of Things (IoT) has driven the development, among others, of many different software architectures for producing, processing, and analyzing heterogeneous data. In many cases, IoT applications share common features, such as the use of a platform or middleware, also known as message broker, that collects and manages data traffic between endpoints. However, in general, data processing is very dependent on the case study (sensors that send temperature data, drones that send images, etc.). Thus, the applications responsible for receiving and processing data, which we call consumers, have to be built ad hoc, since some of their elements have to be specially configured to solve specific needs of the case study. This paper presents Flextory, a software factory tool to make it easier for IoT developers to automatically construct configurable consumer applications, which we call FLEX-consumers. Flextory guides developers through the process of generating Java consumers by selecting some desired features such as, for instance, the particular communication protocol to be used. This way, the developer only has to concentrate on designing the algorithm to process the data. In short, the use of Flextory will result in consumer applications with configurable behavior, namely FLEX-consumers, that can connect to a messaging server (for example RabbitMQ) and process the received messages.</jats:p>},

abstract = {The realm of digital twins is experiencing rapid growth and presents a wealth of opportunities for Industry 4.0. In conjunction with traditional simulation methods, digital twins offer a diverse range of possibilities. However, many existing tools in the domain of open-source digital twins concentrate on specific use cases and do not provide a versatile framework. In contrast, the open-source digital twin framework, OpenTwins, aims to provide a versatile framework that can be applied to a wide range of digital twin applications. In this article, we introduce a re-definition of the original OpenTwins platform that enables the management of custom simulation services and the management of FMI simulation services, which is one of the most widely used simulation standards in the industry and its coexistence with machine learning models, which enables the definition of the next-gen digital twins. Thanks to this integration, digital twins that reflect reality better can be developed, through hybrid models, where simulation data can feed the scarcity of machine learning data and so forth. As part of this project, a simulation model developed through the hydraulic software Epanet was validated in OpenTwins, in addition to an FMI simulation service. The hydraulic model was implemented and tested in an agricultural use case in collaboration with the University of Córdoba, Spain. A machine learning model has been developed to assess the behavior of an FMI simulation through machine learning.

abstract = {Context:

Data quality should be at the core of many Artificial Intelligence initiatives from the very first moment in which data is required for a successful analysis. Measurement and evaluation of the level of quality are crucial to determining whether data can be used for the tasks at hand. Conscientious of this importance, industry and academia have proposed several data quality measurements and assessment frameworks over the last two decades. Unfortunately, there is no common and shared vocabulary for data quality terms. Thus, it is difficult and time-consuming to integrate data quality analysis within a (Big) Data workflow for performing Artificial Intelligence tasks. One of the main reasons is that, except for a reduced number of proposals, the presented vocabularies are neither machine-readable nor processable, needing human processing to be incorporated.

Objective:

This paper proposes a unified data quality measurement and assessment information model. This model can be used in different environments and contexts to describe data quality measurement and evaluation concerns.

Method:

The model has been developed as an ontology to make it interoperable and machine-readable. For better interoperability and applicability, this ontology, BIGOWL4DQ, has been developed as an extension of a previously developed ontology for describing knowledge management in Big Data analytics.

Conclusions:

This extended ontology provides a data quality measurement and assessment framework required when designing Artificial Intelligence workflows and integrated reasoning capacities. Thus, BIGOWL4DQ can be used to describe Big Data analysis and assess the data quality before the analysis.

Result:

Our proposal has been validated with two use cases. First, the semantic proposal has been assessed using an academic use case. And second, a real-world case study within an Artificial Intelligence workflow has been conducted to endorse our work.}

MOODY is designed to be particularly applicable in automatic algorithm configuration, which involves the search of the parameters of an optimization algorithm to optimize its performance. In this context, we observe a notable absence of standardized components, parameters, and related considerations, such as problem characteristics and algorithm configurations. This lack of standardization introduces difficulties in the selection of valid component combinations and in the re-use of algorithmic configurations between different algorithm implementations. We explore the usability and potential development benefits of three popular open-source serverless platforms in the context of IoT: OpenFaaS, Fission, and OpenWhisk. To address this we discuss our experience developing a serverless and low-latency Distributed Deep Neural Network (DDNN) application. Our findings indicate that these serverless platforms require significant resources to operate and are not ideal for constrained devices. In addition, we archived a 55% improvement compared to Kafka-ML's performance under load, a framework without dynamic scaling support, demonstrating the potential of serverless computing for low-latency applications.},

In this study, we present an open-source user-friendly web application powered by deep learning for automatic pollen count and classification. The application aims to simplify the process for non-IT users to count and classify different types of pollen, reducing the effort required compared to manual methods. To overcome the challenges of acquiring large labelled datasets, we propose a semi-automatic labelling approach, which combines human expertise and machine learning techniques. The results demonstrate that our approach significantly reduces the effort required for users to count and classify pollen taxa accurately. Employing well-known pre-trained neural networks for detecting and classifying objects in images is beneficial in a wide range of application fields. However, diverse impediments may degrade the performance achieved by those neural networks. Particularly, Gaussian noise and brightness, among others, may be presented on images as sensor noise due to the limitations of image acquisition devices. In this work, we study the effect of the most representative noise types and brightness alterations on images in the performance of several state-of-the-art object detectors, such as YOLO or Faster-RCNN. Different experiments have been carried out and the results demonstrate how these adversities deteriorate their performance. abstract = {Smartphones have become highly personalized interfaces between people and the technology ecosystem around them. In this sense, they play a key role for a technology shift from the current Internet of Things to a future human-centric paradigm of an Internet of People, automatically adapting smart things and services to the preferences and context of their users. In this paper, we propose the use of Complex Event Processing (CEP) engines deployed in the users’ smartphones granting them context-awareness capabilities in order to react to external stimulus, and enabling them to interact both with smart things and services in the surroundings of the users. With that purpose, we have designed a communication architecture that interconnects CEP engines running on smartphones, providing a framework for building applications for Mobile-based Collaborative Social Computing (MCSC). For that, we make use of previous works of the authors with Digital Avatars, a framework which promotes the use of smartphones for inferring and sharing a unique digital avatar or virtual profile of each user. The resulting framework, which we have called Collaborative CEP, allows to implement complex interactions among users, and between them and the IoT, a common need in Collaborative Social Computing applications. We provide a proof of concept based on the implementation of a Cops and Robbers game to test the expressiveness and correct functioning of the framework, and we evaluate its performance and efficiency.},

abstract = {Airborne pollen can trigger allergic rhinitis and other respiratory diseases in the synthesised population, which makes it one of the most relevant biological contaminants. Therefore, implementing accurate forecast systems is a priority for public health. The current forecast models are generally useful, but they falter when long time series of data are managed. The emergence of new computational techniques such as the LSTM algorithms could constitute a significant improvement for the pollen risk assessment. In this study, several LSTM variants were applied to forecast monthly pollen integrals in Málaga (southern Spain) using meteorological variables as predictors. Olea and Urticaceae pollen types were modelled as proxies of different annual pollen curves, using data from the period 1992–2022. The aims of this study were to determine the LSTM variants with the highest accuracy when forecasting monthly pollen integrals as well as to compare their performance with the traditional pollen forecast methods. The results showed that the CNN-LSTM were the most accurate when forecasting the monthly pollen integrals for both pollen types. Moreover, the traditional forecast methods were outperformed by all the LSTM variants. These findings highlight the importance of implementing LSTM models in pollen forecasting for public health and research applications.},

abstract = {Network Function Virtualization (NFV) aims to replace traditional network functions running in proprietary hardware with software instances (i.e., Virtual Network Functions, VNFs) embedded in general-purpose virtualization solutions. Aware that the transition to a fully virtualized network infrastructure will pay a high energy cost, especially in IoT systems composed of a myriad of devices, energy efficiency is one of the key innovative targets of future networks. Edge computing should be considered in IoT environments to save time and energy by processing data near the producer devices. However, applying NFV in the context of IoT/Edge/Cloud environments complicates the placement of VNFs, due to the inherent heterogeneous nature of such environments and the variety of resource demands. This paper proposes an energy-aware placement of service function chains of VNFs and a resource-allocation solution for heterogeneous edge infrastructures that considers the computation and communication delays according to the VNFs’ location in the infrastructure. The solution has been integrated with the ETSI-sponsored project Open Source Management and Orchestration (OSM) as an extension called HADES, which allows the configuration of VNFs and their subsequent resource allocation and deployment at the edge, minimizing energy consumption and ensuring a quality of service. We have applied the deployment of augmented reality services in real and simulated scenarios. The results show up to a 59% reduction in power consumption and QoS compliance in all scenarios considered compared to default OSM placement and four other allocation policies. We prove that our solution has negligible power overhead, and validate the scalability and applicability of HADES.

abstract = {<jats:p> This article presents a novel approach to wildfire risk assessment and behaviour prediction by leveraging open geospatial data and ontologies. The proposed methodology includes a spatially weighted index model and multicriteria analysis to represent the risk of forest fires in the affected area. It bridges gaps in theory and practice, offering a comprehensive solution for evaluating potential forest fire risk in near real time, predicting fire behaviour and elucidating the semantics of fire management. During dry and hot conditions, forest fires tend to escalate. Hence, we propose an algorithm that combines experts’ empirical criteria and open-source data to identify dangerous fires in near real time, aiding authorities in directing attention to the riskiest areas. The objective is to predict forest fire behaviour, a complex and nonlinear system influenced by dynamic factors such as weather conditions, topography and land use. Our methodology enables real-time assessment of potential forest fire risks, complemented by predictive fire behaviour scenarios and a descriptive ontology of fire management semantics. We examine existing fire-related ontologies and propose a comprehensive one encompassing incident descriptions, firefighting resources, actor interrelations and knowledge for effective action. By classifying fire sources, our algorithm enables strategic decision-making to prevent uncontrolled fires. This solution significantly enhances data using semantic and spatial relationships among wildfire resources. Furthermore, we demonstrate how ontologies improve data integration and interoperability among diverse systems and organisations involved in forest fire risk management, fostering better coordination and faster responses to critical situations. To facilitate decision-making, we create decision-making scenarios linked to analysed hot spots, drawing from open hot spot data such as National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Fire Information for Resource Management System (FIRMS), OpenStreetMap (OSM), OpenWeatherMap (OWM) and OpenTopoData (OTD). We propose an ordinal and linguistic classification system (F1–F5) denoting risk levels as low, moderate, high, very high and extreme. These values are obtained through factor aggregation and fuzzy logic. A publicly accessible, interactive web map displays the results derived from this model. Overall, our contributions to wildfire risk management provide authorities with a valuable tool to make informed decisions and mitigate the damaging effects of wildfires. </jats:p>},

MTIP uses application and network status information to select network paths intelligently and, in so doing, to improve reliability and latency. The paper studies how different configurations of the MTIP algorithm impact its path selection and the effect on lost and late packets. This evaluation is performed in an emulated environment and in a 4G/5G lab to evaluate the protocol in diverse scenarios. However, a series of main critical issues arise in the healthcare context related to the limited amount of available labelled data to build a classification model. Moreover, the discrimination ability of activities is often challenging to capture since the variety of movement patterns in a particular group of patients (e.g. obesity or geriatric patients) is limited over time. Consequently, the proposed work presents a novel approach for Human Activity Recognition (HAR) in healthcare to avoid this problem. This proposal is based on semi-supervised classification with Encoder-Decoder Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) using a combination strategy of public labelled and private unlabelled raw sensor data. In this sense, the model will be able to take advantage of the large amount of unlabelled data available by extracting relevant characteristics in these data, which will increase the knowledge in the innermost layers. Hence, the trained model can generalize well when used in real-world use cases. Additionally, real-time patient monitoring is provided by Apache Spark streaming processing with sliding windows. For testing purposes, a real-world case study is conducted with a group of overweight patients in the healthcare system of Andalusia (Spain), classifying close to 30 TBs of accelerometer sensor-based data. The proposed HAR streaming deep-learning approach properly classifies movement patterns in real-time conditions, crucial for long-term daily patient monitoring.},

We evaluate our approach over a realistic case study derived from the traffic network of Málaga (Spain) with 275 traffic lights that should be scheduled optimally. The experimental analysis reveals that the hybrid algorithm comprising IRACE plus differential evolution offers statistically better results than the other algorithms when the budget of simulations is low. In contrast, IRACE performs better than the hybrids for a high simulations budget, although the optimization time is much longer.},

The head-mounted display (HMD) systems, such as Meta Quest 2, grant access to immersive virtual reality (iRV) experiences. This study aims to validate the Meta Quest 2 HMD system as an alternative for screening neck movement in healthy people. The device provides data about the position and orientation of the head and, thus, the neck mobility around the three anatomical axes. The authors develop a VR application that solicits participants to perform six neck movements (rotation, flexion, and lateralization on both sides), which allows the collection of corresponding angles. An InertiaCube3 inertial measurement unit (IMU) is also attached to the HMD to compare the criterion to a standard. The mean absolute error (MAE), the percentage of error (%MAE), and the criterion validity and agreement are calculated. The study shows that the average absolute errors do not exceed 1° (average = 0.48 ± 0.09°). The rotational movement’s average %MAE is 1.61 ± 0.82%. The head orientations obtain a correlation between 0.70 and 0.96. The Bland–Altman study reveals good agreement between the HMD and IMU systems. Overall, the study shows that the angles provided by the Meta Quest 2 HMD system are valid to calculate the rotational angles of the neck in each of the three axes. The obtained results demonstrate an acceptable error percentage and a very minimal absolute error when measuring the degrees of neck rotation; therefore, the sensor can be used for screening neck disorders in healthy people.</jats:p>},

abstract = {The smart grid concept is key to the energy revolution that has been taking place in recent years. Smart Grids have been present in energy research since their emergence. However, the scarcity of data from different energy sources, hardware power, or co-simulation environments has hindered their development. With advances in multi-agent-based systems, the possibility of simulating the behavior of different energy sources, combining real building consumption, and simulated data, storage batteries and vehicle charging points, has opened up. This development has resulted in much research published using both simulated and physical data. All these investigations show that the main problem is that the machine learning algorithms do not fully match the real behavior, it is complex to use them to replicate the different actions to be performed. This paper aims to combine the approach of behavior prediction with state-of-the-art techniques, such as deep learning and deep reinforcement learning, to simulate unknown or critical system scenarios. A very important element in smart grids is the possibility of maintaining consumption within specific ranges (flexibility). For this purpose, we have made use of Tensorflow libraries that predict energy consumption and deep reinforcement learning to select the optimal actions to be performed in our system. abstract = {<jats:p>Usually, human participation is required in order to provide feedback during the game tuning or balancing process. Moreover, this is commonly an iterative process in which play-testing is required as well as human interaction for gathering all important information to improve and tune the game components’ specification. In this paper, a mechanism is proposed to accelerate this process and reduce significantly the costs of it, contributing with a solution to perform the game parameter tuning and game balancing using search algorithms and artificial intelligence (AI) techniques. The process is executed in a fully automated way, and just requires a game specification written in a particular video game description language. Automated play-testing, and game’s feedback information analysis, are related to perform game parameters’ tuning and balancing, leading to offer a solution for the problem of optimizing a video game specification. Recently, XVGDL, a new language for specifying video games which is based on the eXtensible Markup Language (XML), has been presented. This paper uses XVGDL<jats:bold>+</jats:bold>, an extension of this lan- guage that incorporates new components to specify, within the video game specification, desirable goals or requirements to be evaluated after each game execution. A prototypical implementation of a Game Engine (termed XGE<jats:bold>+</jats:bold>) was also presented. This game engine not only enables the execution of an XVGDL<jats:bold>+ </jats:bold>game specification but also provides feedback information once the game has finished.</jats:p>

          <jats:p>The paper demonstrates that the combination of XVGDL<jats:bold>+ </jats:bold>with XGE<jats:bold>+</jats:bold><jats:bold> </jats:bold>offers a powerful mechanism for helping solving game AI research problems, in this case, the game tuning of video game parameters, with respect to initial optimization goals. These goals, as one of the particularities of the proposal presented here, are included within the game specification, minimizing the input of the process.</jats:p>

          <jats:p>As a practical proof of it, two experiments have been conducted to optimize a game specification written in XVGDL via a hill climbing local search method, in a fully automated way.</jats:p>},

               An optimal recombination operator for two-parent solutions provides the best solution among those that take the value for each variable from one of the parents (gene transmission property). If the solutions are bit strings, the offspring of an optimal recombination operator is optimal in the smallest hyperplane containing the two parent solutions. Exploring this hyperplane is computationally costly, in general, requiring exponential time in the worst case. However, when the variable interaction graph of the objective function is sparse, exploration can be done in polynomial time. In this article, we present a recombination operator, called Dynastic Potential Crossover (DPX), that runs in polynomial time and behaves like an optimal recombination operator for low-epistasis combinatorial problems. We compare this operator, both theoretically and experimentally, with traditional crossover operators, like uniform crossover and network crossover, and with two recently defined efficient recombination operators: partition crossover and articulation points partition crossover. The empirical comparison uses NKQ Landscapes and MAX-SAT instances. DPX outperforms the other crossover operators in terms of quality of the offspring and provides better results included in a trajectory and a population-based metaheuristic, but it requires more time and memory to compute the offspring.},

In this study, we introduce an IoT system based on low-cost hardware that has been installed on the campus of the University of Malaga, in Spain. The sensors gather smart wireless devices (Bluetooth and Wi-Fi) anonymous information and environmental noise level around them. This research studies the spatio-temporal behavior of people and noise pollution in the campus as a short-scale Smart City, i.e., a Smart Campus. Applying specific machine learning algorithms, we have analyzed two months of captured data (61 days). The main findings from the analysis show that most university community members move through the campus at similar hours, generating congestion problems. In addition, the campus suffers from acoustic pollution according to regulations; therefore, we conclude that the proposed system is useful for gathering helpful information for the university community members and managers. Thanks to its low cost, it can be easily extended and even used in other similar environments, allowing democratic access to Smart City services as an excellent added value.</jats:p>},

abstract = {<jats:p> This work aims at giving an updated vision on the successful combination between Metaheuristics and Software Engineering (SE). Mostly during the 90s, varied groups of researchers dealing with search, optimization, and learning (SOL) met SE researchers, all of them looking for a quantified manner of modeling and solving problems in the software field. This paper will discuss on the construction, assessment, and exploitation tasks that help in making software programs a scientific object, subject to automatic study and control. We also want to show with several case studies how the quantification of software features and the automatic search for bugs can improve the software quality process, which eases compliance to ISO/IEEE standards. In short, we want to build intelligent automatic tools that will upgrade the quality of software products and services. Since we approach this new field as a cross-fertilization between two research domains, we then need to talk not only on metaheuristics for SE (well known by now), but also on SE for metaheuristics (not so well known nowadays). In summary, we will discuss here with three time horizons in mind: the old times [before the term search-based SE (SBSE) was used for this], the recent years on SBSE, and the many avenues for future research/development. A new body of knowledge in SOL and SE exists internationally, which is resulting in a new class of researchers able of building intelligent techniques for the benefit of software, that is, of modern societies. </jats:p>},

abstract = {<jats:title>Summary</jats:title><jats:p>During the last decade, the mobile application market has grown steadily thanks to the massive use of smartphones and the emergence of cloud computing for offloading computation tasks and improving the quality of experience. With the more recent deployment of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, this cloud‐based architectural design and the corresponding communication flow has been maintained. Nevertheless, the increasing amount of information exchanged, the stringent requirements of many IoT applications, and the need for these applications to adapt their behavior in real time to the user's context set these architectural assumptions a challenge. Paradigms such as mobile, mist, and edge computing have recently been proposed to exploit the computational and storage capabilities of current smartphones and IoT devices in order to onload some tasks onto them, reducing the overhead on both the cloud and the network. Currently, the application of these paradigms requires much attention from skilled developers to create ad hoc systems, as there lack standards and tools facilitating their use. This communication introduces Human Microservices as a framework facilitating the deployment of APIs on companion devices in order to provide personal and updated information that can be consumed by other entities. The framework improves the integration of humans in the IoT loop and facilitates the deployment of computation units in devices closer to end users, enhancing system response time by reducing the stress on cloud and network infrastructure. The proposed framework is based on existing standards in order to improve software quality and shorten the learning curve.</jats:p>},

abstract = {In this article, we encompass an analysis of the recent advances in parallel genetic algorithms (PGAs). We have selected these algorithms because of the deep interest in many research fields for techniques that can face complex applications where running times and other computational resources are greedily consumed by present solvers, and PGAs act then as efficient procedures that fully use modern computational platforms at the same time that allow the resolution of cutting-edge open problems. We have faced this survey on PGAs with the aim of helping newcomers or busy researchers who want to have a wide vision on the field. Then, we discuss the most well-known models and their implementations from a recent (last six years) and useful point of view: We discuss on highly cited articles, keywords, the venues where they can be found, a very comprehensive (and new) taxonomy covering different research domains involved in PGAs, and a set of recent applications. We also introduce a new vision on open challenges and try to give hints that guide practitioners and specialized researchers. Our conclusion is that there are many advantages to using these techniques and lots of potential interactions to other evolutionary algorithms; as well, we contribute to creating a body of knowledge in PGAs by summarizing them in a structured way, so the reader can find this article useful for practical research, graduate teaching, and as a pedagogical guide to this exciting domain.},

abstract = {<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:p>An adaptive system can modify its settings at runtime as a response to changes in its operational environment. To analyse this kind of systems at design time is a difficult task since it requires considering the system together with the adaptation operations, and taking into account how such adaptations act on the system. In order to use simulation‐based techniques for the analysis of such systems, we not only need precise executable models of the systems to be analyzed, but also to capture the semantics of their adaptation mechanisms. Given the wide range and flexibility of adaptation operations, we need ways to allow the definition of new operations. We present a flexible approach for the definition and simulation‐based analysis in design‐time of adaptive component‐based systems. Our approach combines an extension of the Palladio component model in e‐Motions, a model of the adaptation mechanisms, and elastic requirements specification using the SYBL language. From the model of the system, its adaptation mechanisms, and its requirements, an executable Maude specification is generated for simulation. The application of the approach is illustrated on a use case that comprises some components and adaptations rules. The example is then analyzed using simulations. It is also shown that it is indeed possible to define additional metrics, specify adaptation requirements and rules which conduct simulations of the models in a more flexible way, and that the results of the simulation performed from these definitions can be used to carry on a valuable predictive performance analysis.</jats:p>},

abstract = {<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:p>Researchers in mobile technologies and services are currently requesting testbeds to validate their proposals in a realistic large-scale and controlled environment. Such demands are some times satisfied with private ad-hoc deployments in a given area of coverage. However, given national regulations related to the use of the spectrum and the cost of deployments, these solutions are not feasible for most researchers. In this paper, we introduce the architecture of the research infrastructure developed in the EuWireless project. EuWireless’ objective is to provide private networks that can be dynamically created as slices with different levels of configuration and control, as a cost-effective way to access large-scale testbeds with a licensed spectrum even in different countries. The paper focuses on the architecture of the Point of Presence, the key element in the EuWireless project, and how it will work in practice. We also present a proof of concept implementation that satisfies some of the design objectives and demonstrates the feasibility of the proposal.</jats:p>},

               <jats:p>The Internet of Things (IoT) is a paradigm that permits smart entities to be interconnected anywhere and anyhow. IoT opens new opportunities but also rises new issues. In this dynamic environment, trust is useful to mitigate these issues. In fact, it is important that the smart entities could know and trust the other smart entities in order to collaborate with them. So far, there is a lack of research when considering trust through the whole System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) of a smart IoT entity. In this paper, we suggest a new approach that considers trust not only at the end of the SDLC but also at the start of it. More precisely, we explore the modeling phase proposing a model-driven approach extending UML and SysML considering trust and its related domains, such as security and privacy. We propose stereotypes for each diagram in order to give developers a way to represent trust elements in an effective way. Moreover, we propose two new diagrams that are very important for the IoT: a traceability diagram and a context diagram. This model-driven approach will help developers to model the smart IoT entities according to the requirements elicited in the previous phases of the SDLC. These models will be a fundamental input for the following and final phases of the SDLC.</jats:p>},

abstract = {<jats:p>The high heterogeneity of 5G use cases requires the extension of the traditional per-component testing procedures provided by certification organizations, in order to devise and incorporate methodologies that cover the testing requirements from vertical applications and services. In this paper, we introduce an experimentation methodology that is defined in the context of the 5GENESIS project, which aims at enabling both the testing of network components and validation of E2E KPIs. The most important contributions of this methodology are its modularity and flexibility, as well as the open-source software that was developed for its application, which enable lightweight adoption of the methodology in any 5G testbed. We also demonstrate how the methodology can be used, by executing and analyzing different experiments in a 5G Non-Standalone (NSA) deployment at the University of Malaga. The key findings of the paper are an initial 5G performance assessment and KPI analysis and the detection of under-performance issues at the application level. Those findings highlight the need for reliable testing and validation procedures towards a fair benchmarking of generic 5G services and applications.</jats:p>},

abstract = {<jats:p>The pervasive presence of smartphones has emerged as one of the key elements for sensing people contextual information. Their sensors and communication capabilities can be used to gather a huge amount of data. Such capabilities have made it possible to compose profiles of people by relating different parameters such as time and location. This paper contributes in this sense by providing the basis for the composition of temporal proximity patterns—when and whom people share their time with each other. For this purpose, the Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) advertisement protocol was used. The contribution of this work departs from that of those who use BLE technology focused on measuring the intensity of the signals to, for example, determine distances. In this field, a huge amount of work has been already done with very interesting results. Instead, in this work, BLE is used to emit and sense the presence of people. A set of algorithms are then used inside the smartphones to analyse the data gathered and to detect proximity patterns between people. This scenario avoids the difficulties that appear in other works—like those focused on people positioning—derived from the lack of precision of the sensors and the differences between BLE chipsets. Tests to evaluate the consumption, precision, and reliability of using this technology, together with the proposed algorithms, confirmed the feasibility of the approach. In addition, the proposal has proved very useful for the automatic construction of social networks based on physical closeness of people.</jats:p>},

                  <jats:title>Motivation</jats:title>

                  <jats:p>Multiple sequence alignment (MSA) consists of finding the optimal alignment of three or more biological sequences to identify highly conserved regions that may be the result of similarities and relationships between the sequences. MSA is an optimization problem with NP-hard complexity (non-deterministic polynomial-time hardness), because the time needed to find optimal alignments raises exponentially along with the number of sequences and their length. Furthermore, the problem becomes multiobjective when more than one score is considered to assess the quality of an alignment, such as maximizing the percentage of totally conserved columns and minimizing the number of gaps. Our motivation is to provide a Python tool for solving MSA problems using evolutionary algorithms, a nonexact stochastic optimization approach that has proven to be effective to solve multiobjective problems.</jats:p>

                  <jats:title>Results</jats:title>

                  <jats:p>The software tool we have developed, called Sequoya, is written in the Python programming language, which offers a broad set of libraries for data analysis, visualization and parallelism. Thus, Sequoya offers a graphical tool to visualize the progress of the optimization in real time, the ability to guide the search toward a preferred region in run-time, parallel support to distribute the computation among nodes in a distributed computing system, and a graphical component to assist in the analysis of the solutions found at the end of the optimization.</jats:p>

abstract = {The unsustainable development of countries has created a problem due to the unstoppable waste generation. Moreover, waste collection is carried out following a pre-defined route that does not take into account the actual level of the containers collected. Therefore, optimizing the way the waste is collected presents an interesting opportunity. In this study, we tackle the problem of predicting the waste generation ratio in real-world conditions, i.e., under uncertainty. Particularly, we use a deep neuroevolutionary technique to automatically design a recurrent network that captures the filling level of all waste containers in a city at once, and we study the suitability of our proposal when faced to noisy and faulty data. We validate our proposal using a real-world case study, consisting of more than two hundred waste containers located in a city in Spain, and we compare our results to the state-of-the-art. The results show that our approach exceeds all its competitors and that its accuracy in a real-world scenario, i.e., under uncertain data, is good enough for optimizing the waste collection planning.},

abstract = {<jats:title>Summary</jats:title><jats:p>This paper presents an integrated approach for testing mobile applications (apps) against a set of extra‐functional properties to be used by app developers. The approach starts with the (manual or automatic) extraction of the interaction model, that is, a formal model of the potential user interactions with the app. The model is constructed to allow a model checking tool to exhaustively extract the so‐called app user flows, that is, the sequences of user actions, that constitute the test cases. In the final step, the app user flows are executed on the app running on real devices. The resulting execution traces are enriched with different measures and verified against a set of extra‐functional properties of interest. The approach has been adapted to analyse several applications running at the same time with several devices supporting the applications. This paper presents the definition and formalization of both the modelling language for the interaction model and the specification language to represent the extra‐functional properties. It also describes a methodology for automatically extracting the model. abstract = {<jats:p>This paper presents the design options for creating a Pan-European mobile network for research in the context of the European Horizon 2020 EuWireless project. The most likely direction is a platform that makes it easier to create network slices for research. In this context, we identify one promising technology to implement network slicing in 5G networks: the framework GÉANT Testbeds Service (GTS). GTS is currently a production service by GÉANT that offers remote construction and use of virtual testbeds for wired networks mapped to the real GÉANT infrastructure. These GTS-virtualized testbed environments conform to Software Define Networks (SDNs) principles and offer compute, storage, and switching resources, at scale and with line rate performance. In this paper, we explain how the current (wired oriented) GTS can be extended with the 5G components, such as radio access nodes (gNBs), transport networks, user devices, etc., in order to implement 5G network slices. Our first conclusion is that using GTS for EuWireless implementation is feasible, dramatically increasing the potential impact of this service in the research community.</jats:p>},

abstract = {Currently, mobile devices are the most popular pervasive computing devices, and they are becoming the primary way for accessing Internet. Battery is a critical resource in such personal computing gadgets, network communications being one of the primary energy consuming activities in any mobile app. Indeed, as web-based communication is the most used explicitly or implicitly by mobile devices, HTTP-based traffic is the most power demanding one. So, mobile web developers should be aware of how much energy demands the different web-based communication alternatives. The goal of this paper is to measure and compare the energy consumption of three asynchronous HTTP-based methods in mobile devices in different browsers. Our experiments focus on three HTTP-based asynchronous communication models that allow a web server to push data to a client browser through a HTTP/1.1 interaction: Polling, Long Polling, and WebSockets. The resulted measurements are then analysed to get more accurate understanding of the impact of the selected method, and the mobile browser, in the energy consumption of the asynchronous HTTP-based communication. The utility of these experiments is to show developers what are the factors and settings that mostly influence the energy consumption when different web-based asynchronous communication methods are used, helping them to choose the most beneficial solution if possible. With this information, mobile web developers should be able to reduce the power consumption of the front-end of web applications for mobile devices, just selecting and configuring the best asynchronous method or mobile browser, improving the performance of HTTP-based communication in terms of energy demand.},

abstract = {<jats:p> Slab track systems have the potential to become a more sustainable option for high-speed railway infrastructures than traditional ballasted tracks. Traditionally, the systems that monitor these infrastructures have been costly, but advances in the last few decades have made the use of wireless sensor networks within these infrastructures a feasible solution that can be used to evaluate their degradation for failure detection and prediction. Since the cost of these systems is steadily decreasing, it is now possible to use permanent wireless sensor networks as an integral part of the overall system to pave the way for smart infrastructures that can get real-time information about the structural health of the infrastructure at a relatively low cost. In order to show the suitability of this kind of system to monitor the structural health, three demonstrators, developed in the context of the FASTRACK project, related to the design and construction of a monitoring system for slab track systems that measures vibrations and displacements in the track, are presented. FASTRACK uses an innovative approach where data read by sensors are sent to passing trains, which are used as data mules to upload the information to a remote server. On arrival at the station, the data are stored in a database, which is queried by an application to extract relevant information by means of analysis algorithms to detect and predict failures. The first real scenario tests the limits of the system under stress situations. The second one tests the system in an actual, installed slab track to analyze the suitability of the communication architecture and to study a transition zone between slab tracks to a ballast track. The last scenario deals with the data mule performance tests. </jats:p>},
