The 6G Research Lab & Victoria Network is inaugurated at UMA, a step towards the future of connectivity

On January 17, the inauguration of the 6G Research Lab & Victoria Network took place, a result of the collaboration between Keysight Technologies and the University of Málaga (UMA). This lab, located in the Ada Byron research building, aims to lead the development of 6G technology by offering innovative solutions to key use cases and technological challenges. Born from the European 6G-SANDBOX project, it is designed to continue beyond this framework, supporting new joint initiatives with other collaborating entities.

The ceremony featured the participation of Teodomiro López Navarrete, Rector of UMA; Michael Dieudonne, R&D Manager at Keysight; and Pedro Merino Gómez, Director of the “José María Troya Linero” Institute of Software Technology and Engineering, who emphasized the importance of this infrastructure. The event also included presentations moderated by Antonio Morales Siles, UMA’s Vice-Rector for Research. Participants included Alicia Izquierdo, Councilor of the Málaga City Council; Julia Criado, Deputy Director General for Spectrum Management and Planning; Antonio Guzmán, Director of Telefónica’s Discovery area; Rosario Trapero, Director of Dekra’s Connected Car area; Eduardo Rodríguez-Bejarano, Director of the Subtropical and Mediterranean Horticulture Institute “La Mayora” (IHSM); and María del Carmen Aguayo, Director of UMA’s Telecommunications Institute (TELMA).

The lab comprises three main areas. The Monitoring Space will focus on real-time analysis of 5G and 6G mobile networks using the Victoria Network, a multi-provider private network positioning Málaga as a global innovation hub. The Measurement Space, equipped with advanced Keysight technology, will address topics such as new components, AI-driven networks, digital twins, and security. Finally, the Experience Space will demonstrate practical 6G use cases, exploring applications such as autonomous driving, immersive reality, and smart agriculture.

This initiative strengthens Málaga as an epicenter of future connectivity, attracting talent and fostering research in sectors such as transportation, industry, and tourism.
